How to whitewash a brick fireplace, a simple DIY project.
Staring with an obvious before picture of our home (this room) when we first bought it:
Keep it simple, when you get too complex you forget the obvious. – Al McGuire
When you buy a fixer-upper home you really can get carried away in a hurry!
There have been talks of changing roof lines, expanding walls, filling in a sunken living room, changing the siding, and SO MUCH MORE!
Alas, between time and money we have to keep it more simple.
Dreaming is free but remodeling isn't! #salvagequotes #remodeling #homeownershipRecently we shared with you An Easy Gas Fireplace Insert Makeover. We were also working on a simple whitewash to soften the brick just a little.
The current trend seems to be to completely paint the fireplace white but I just couldn’t do it. I really do like the brick but just wanted it a little more muted.
We have painted the wood paneling and that post will be coming soon.
In the picture below the top portion has been whitewashed and the bottom has not.
Again, this is very simple!

*Salvage Tip – Use an old paintbrush or a foam one.
WHITEWASH INSTRUCTIONS
- In a container, thin down paint to 50% paint 50% water….. at least.
- Test on a loose brick that is similar in color to yours if you like or in an inconspicuous spot.
- This was done approx 60% water and 40% paint, if not more. You can always add more but the take away is a killer!
- Repeat as needed.
That’s it!!!!!!!!!
I told you it was easy.

Very nice! We have thought about painting ours too. At the very least, redoing the mantel. Not sure what the builder was thinking…lol…brick going every which way!
Sometimes you wonder what people were thinking when they built some things huh? 🙂 I can’t wait to see what you do to yours!
Wow, what a difference! It looks rustic and aged now. So pretty!
Jen, It was so easy! Gotta love an easy project 🙂
Wow, that made quite a change and really made for a softer look. Would love to see the whole
fireplace, as I have thought about painting my brick white, but saw a white washed one on someones
blog awhile back and thought that might be a better plan.
Thanks for sharing this,
blessings, Nellie
Nellie, Thanks for your comment. I do plan on doing a room view soon but it’s not done quite yet. I hope you’ll check back to see the whole thing. I have seen a stronger whitewash and it looks amazing. This softer view fits me better for now 🙂 If you want updates on this room and others, you can sign up for the email updates and only receive info when there is a new post (no spam). Thanks again!
I had those jeans – and that fireplace! 😉 Great transformation – thanks for sharing at Talented Tuesday!
