Today we are welcoming Jeanette Sumruld from @Craftyincrosby as a monthly contributor.
Hi everyone! My name is Jeanette Sumruld and I’m a small-town gal from Crosby, TX and you can find me on Instagram or TikTok as @craftyincrosby. I love to craft, thrift and create and one of my favorite things to do is to take something and make it better. I love the thrill of thrifting something inexpensive and turning it into a treasure! My hubby is always in on my adventures and usually just rolls his eyes when I say, “I was thinking….” and helps in any way he can.
Jeanette had a Facebook Marketplace find (which I’m all on board with as you can tell from HERE) and updated it with CARDBOARD AND WRAPPING PAPER!
FACEBOOK MARKETPLACE CABINET HUTCH BEFORE
In early 2021, when we were mostly homebound, my hubby drove 60 miles to pick up a hutch for me from Facebook marketplace. It was a midcentury piece that someone tried to refinish, and it had some rough spots. We used it for a bit, but I decided it was just too dark and looked for a way to brighten it up. Pinterest had lots of great ideas involving wallpaper, but I knew I didn’t want to do anything permanent to it so that when I got around to refinishing it (a girl can always dream!), I wouldn’t have to remove the paper. I decided to use cardboard, tape and wrapping paper to give it a changeable background. I feel like it just makes all my thrifted treasures pop instead of fading into the woodwork.
Here is a photo showing a shelf without the backdrop and you can see how dark it is –

How to Make a Background for Your Cabinet Hutch with Wrapping Paper
This was such an easy way to brighten the hutch and can be changed at any time.
I started with panels I cut to fit from a cardboard box and then covered them in wrapping paper. You want the cardboard to fit snugly and in order to be able to remove them, I added tabs of tape that I folded over onto itself (or you can use double sided tape).
You can see the tab sticking out here:
I currently have 2 sets of cardboard inserts and one of those has paper on both sides. One side has the paper coming over the edge and the other side is folded and taped only on that side.
I’m a sucker for wrapping paper and have found that Home Goods is a great place to buy beautiful papers at a discounted price. This also allows me to switch up the backdrops without breaking the bank.
TIP – Local BUY NOTHING groups, yard sales, thrift store, and marketplace are also good places to pick up gift wrap.
Bonus Tip to Upgrading a Cabinet Hutch
One other quick and easy update we made to the hutch was to add 2 crates from Michaels to the top. We stained these to match the hutch and they also have wrapping paper inserts in them. This gives us extra display space for all of our vintage treasures.
So, the next time you see that perfect shelf or cabinet hutch at the thrift store, just imagine how fabulous it might be with a bright pop of temporary color in the background!
Thanks for having me over today! I love sharing my thrift finds, crafts and holiday treasures, so stop by Instagram or TikTok and say hello!
