Today is the first day in 12 days of amazing Christmas inspiration. As you can see from the list above, we have a great group of bloggers coming together to share holiday crafts, recipes, and décor oh my!!!
For the first day of Christmas my true love sent to me: ORNAMENTS ON A CHRISTMAS TREE
SANTA’S MAGIC KEY ORNAMENT
In true Salvage Sister and Mister fashion, this is an upcycle project.
But first, do you know the story of Santa’s Magic Key?
“The key is very special you see,
it won’t work for just you or me-
hang it just outside your door,
go to bed and worry no more-
close your eyes and close them tight
for Santa Claus is coming tonight!”
The ornament can be hung on the tree and on Christmas Eve, after reading the story, the child who finds the key on the tree can place it outside for Santa.

This Santa’s Magic Key started with an old skeleton key. You can generally find them in thrift, craft, or antique stores (this is a great budget friendly option as well- online).
Now, here is the tricky part! The 25 was made out of counting chips/tokens found in a misc. jar purchased at a yard sale (like these counting chips).
The Mister, “What if I were to grind out the 25 on the white and glue the red to the back?”
Me, “Um, how would it get to look finished….. like an old script font?”
The Mister, “I’ll show you.”
Me, {skeptical}
The Mister, BOOM! MIC DROP!
He drew out the numbers in pencil, and with a rotary hand piece, carved out the 25! Since it would be attached to the key, he made a pin hole at the top.
With some bakery string, the 25 tag was attached to the key.
Finally, a piece of red scrap satin ribbon was tied at the top.
TIPS
SALVAGE TIP #1 – Keep all those ribbon pieces in one place so you have them when you are doing projects. I’ve been known to keep ribbons from just about anything like clothing tags and such.
SALVAGE TIP #2 – You may have caught this next tip on Instagram Stories. If your ribbon is too wrinkled, you can spray the ribbon with water and lay it out flat to dry.
And that’s it!
I love this and I love that you and your hubby are a team. Mine is with me too 🙂 It’s truly makes for an amazing relationship when you can work together! Can’t wait to check out all the other blogs that have joined in!!

Leanna, It was a great little find for sure.
What a beautiful Idea, I wish I did this when mine were young. Your Santa key is just lovely
Amber, We are in the same boat with older kids now.
I’ve never heard about this Santa’s key story before, but I love it! I wish I knew about this when my kids were younger.
Erlene, Right? Mine are older too but it’s such a fun little thing to do. I guess I will have to wait for grandkids to do it with (although I think I have a few years for that)
What a sweet tradition, and a beautiful Santa’s magic key!
