Welcome back $100 Room Challenge friends!
WHAT….A…..WEEK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We have been up to our eyeballs in cabinetwork, and boy do they have a story to tell.
{Disclaimer – Cabinets were harmed in the making of this post! Authorities have been notified.}
When we first moved in, three years ago, a person who’s name shall be withheld for protection, decided it would be a good idea to willy nilly paint ALL the cabinets in the house before we moved in. No tutorial, no blog posts, no info, nadda! Just put a paintbrush in everyone’s hand …..including children….and have at it.
Well, needless to say, that didn’t go well. We then had “Let’s Correct The Mistake Sanding Parties” to try and fix a good majority of issues. The bathroom was left untouched. We have been without doors on this bathroom’s vanity the whole time we’ve lived here.
This is honestly what they have looked like……..CLASSY!
The whole house has needed (s) so much work that we just do what we can when we have the time and money to do so.
During one of the MANY sanding get-togethers…. that same crazy person said, “I kind of like this rustic sanded cabinet, spots of paint look.” Although we went with painting our kitchen cabinets white, the crazy lady won for the bathroom cabinets.
Now, how do you give a tutorial for this and would anyone else ever do this besides the crazy lady…ummm..person??????

1 – Willy nilly slap paint on your cabinets.
2 – Decide it was a mistake and you had no idea what you were doing.
3 – Use a heat gun and putty knife to remove as much paint as you can. Get heat gun too close to wood sometimes for a burned edge (on purpose of course.)
4 – Use some bleach to try and give it a look.
5 – Sand as needed.
6 – Try to even it out with a dry brush and more paint.
7 – Leave your doors outside for 3 years in the Oregon weather.
8 – Basically abuse the heck out of them until you get the look you are after..the “rustic” bathroom cabinet look you are going for.
Step 9 – Put some decent door handles and knobs on so it looks like they are meant to be that way cause they are. OWN IT!
(Tutorial for how to install handles/knobs coming soon.)
RUSTIC FEEL
Since the rustic look fits right into the “plan” of the house, which is kind of a hodge-podge of farmhouse, rustic industrial, and whatever the crazy person can get away with anyways, it seems to work out okay.
We would say this is a good temporary fix, but let’s get real. We have owned this house for three years and the bathroom vanity didn’t even have doors on it. This will probably stay this way for quite a while. And really, who can afford a total bath remodel……….PLUS we have a lot more fish to fry here.
This week, we also got the cabinet above the toilet removed (which wasn’t planned but it looks great without it) and the all the trim painted white. Don’t you move into a house and paint all the dark things white and change all the white things dark?
Total Spent:
- Abusing Cabinets – FREE
- Trim – Already had paint (FREE)
- Removing cabinet – FREE
- License Plate was Salvage Sister’s Dad’s plate from when they lived in Illinois.
- Cabinet knobs and handles – $15.45 (yes, cents will be posted as we want every last penny of this $100)
That brings our amount spent to $37.45 with the light fixture and this project.
Stay tuned. Next week is the big reveal. We have got to get crackalackin on the floors unless you think we should keep the yellow….hahahhaha!
UPDATE – Here is the low-cost rustic bathroom reveal and as of 5/2020 it’s still the same.

Thanks Patti. It’s not like it’s going to hurt anything we already had. That’s the beauty of a dated home…you can’t really hurt anything by trying.
WOW! such a rustic vibe. I love the galvanized sign! It looks so charming so far.! Can’t wait to see and read everything next week.
Maria
Maria, Yep I am excited to see all the reveals for sure!!
Hilarious! Own it and love it. To each our own, right?! Looking forward to next week.
Ashley, Yep people are always scratching their head and going “what is she thinking?” Usually it comes together but you never know. 🙂
HAHA! Of course I want to paint the dark things light and the light things dark. Isn’t that what everyone does? Love that sign. And the finish on the cabinets is really cool and rustic. Can’t wait to see the reveal next week.

Angie, Thanks for stopping by. The Mister made me that sign and it’s probably one of my most fav things.
This whole post just cracked me up! I was hoping you’d somehow show us a miraculous way to work those yellow floors into a fab remodel, but I suppose I’ll have to be content with the changes you have in store for them…
Meredith, Yeah, I don’t think the yellow is going to make it 🙂 I mean some person was obsessed with yellow…there was yellow ceiling, yellow wallpaper, yellow sink and shower, yellow floors…yikes!! I know it was the 70’s but hello there are other colors to choose from. I’m looking forward to seeing all these room reveals. Thanks for stopping by 🙂
Oh my word, I was cracking up! Yep, that is exactly how some of our projects have gone! Can’t wait to see it all come together!

Natalie, I’m glad I’m not the only one 🙂 The room is done and now to take pics
My motto is, the chippier the better. And the less I have to worry about it getting chipped up. Love how your bathroom is coming along. That soap sign goes perfect with the rustic style you have going on. In suspense over what you’re going to do with the floors!! Until next week:)
Amy, I’m with you. Even though I would love some new things, the advantage of my stuff is ..it can get damaged and no one will know 🙂
Without a doubt the best tutorial ever 😉 I loved it. I think that crazy person should come visit so we can have a sanding party.
Michelle, YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!
Rustic and antique tho. Nostalgic feels. This one is good.
