Do you have a recipe that just hits the season spot? You know, the one that it almost wouldn’t seem like the holiday without. This is one of ours. A family recipe for three generations strong.
Now……It may seem easy to share a family recipe but, truth be told, there is a certain hesitation. It’s not because we don’t want to share, welllllll, but because it seems sort of private and special to the family. It feels like once it’s out in the world, it’s not just your families anymore.
Anyone else?
We suspect we aren’t alone as some people have been known to “adjust” their recipes so you don’t have the exact one.
The Mister’s family has been making this Raisin Can Bread for many years, and who knows others could make it as well, but it’s our go to breakfast on Christmas morning. We have this, fruit, and drinks and open presents.
Something unique about this recipe? It reuses cans. See you don’t need fancy equipment! Start salvaging those cans now so you can make this for your Christmas morning (this is where we will be)!
Fair warning – Everyone will fight over the top piece, like a muffin top.
(We promise…this is our actual recipe!)
Don’t forget Pin to Share:
- Heat water just to a boil.
- Combine raisins, baking soda, and butter in a bowl. Once water is heated, pour water over this mixture. (Mixture will froth.) Let sit to cool.
- Meanwhile, combine flour and sugar in large mixing bowl.
- Combine egg and vanilla together in a small bowl.
- Once raisin mixture has cooled off, aprox 15-30 min), add egg and vanilla mixture. Now combine that into the flour and sugar (don't overmix here.)
- Spray clean cans with a non-stick spray. Fill cans 2/3 full with batter.
- Bake at 350 degrees for aprox 45 min. Set for 35 and check with a toothpick in the center.
- Remove from oven to a cooking rack. They will slid right out of the cans and be ready to slice.
This recipe can be doubled, and we highly recommend doing that. It freezes very well.
What's your go to holiday recipe?
I can’t wait to try it! Pinned so I won’t forget! Thank you for sharing it
Crystal, I am sure you will enjoy it. Its delicious!
I have ALWAYS wanted to do this~ Yeehaw!!! Great gift idea too❤️
Vickie, This bread or baking in a can? I never know others who made this particular recipe so it’s really neat to hear about it.
Do you know the nutritional value per serving and what is a serving?
Hi Sarita,
I have plans on updating this recipe to include that info, but I haven’t done so yet. I apologize for this inconvenience and hope t rectify this soon.
I love this. We’re gonna try it.
Hey Debi, Oh it’s yummy! Hope you enjoy. Merry Christmas!
what size can is recommended?
Hi Kathleen, We used the standard can size 15 oz I believe.
Ok that looks delicious and I’m going to make it as soon as I get a few cans! Thanks!
I’d love to hear back if you do make it.
Hi! I was wondering if smaller cans could be used? I am planning on making this for my Pop-pop and he doesn’t need larger portions and thought that he could pull one out of the freezer when he wanted just a serving size.
Hi Kim, I haven’t tested it in smaller cans, but you should be able to just fill whatever can size to about 3/4 full and reduce baking time. Also, you can bake as is, slice, and freeze.
HOw many eggs are called for. I am in the middle of making this so if you could answer asap, that would be great. Thanks.
Judy, Oh I am glad I saw this quickly. It’s one egg.
My mom made this when I was younger. Loved it. Now it’s my turn to try to make it.
I hope you do. It’s a favorite here.
Wow…Sounds great! Going to give it a try, I think I may also try our fam. Banana,Coconut Bread in the cans and pass them out as gifts at Christmas house….
Thank you Bobbielynn….your version would be good too.
