Turning Easter eggs into ‘Hatch Animal’ Valentine exchange idea for classmates.
I chews you to be my valentine.
Well, there certainly was a bit of craziness around the “Hatch Animals” this past Christmas. Some people were trying to sell them for over $500!!!!! Yikes!
Since not every kiddo was able to get one, we thought a Hatch Animal Valentine would be perfect this Valentine’s Day or even a rainy day craft.
BONUS: You can upcycle your Easter Eggs for this project.

HATCH ANIMAL VALENTINE INSTRUCTIONS
- Take a plastic egg and paint it white/beige (eggshell). Let dry.
- While the egg is drying make the animal.
- Glue (with a hot glue gun) medium pom pom on top of a larger pom pom of the same color.
- Cut an oval slightly larger than the eyes and glue to medium (top) pom pom (where eyes will go).
- Glue eyes to felt.
- Cut a piece of felt to make a beak. I eyeballed it. Glue it to just under the eyes.
- For the wings, take feathers and glue to each side.
- You can add any additional items to make the ‘hatch animal’ unique. You can look at these as examples.
- Take a pencil and your two different dot colors.
- Squeeze a little paint on a paper plate (yes, the one you just used for breakfast..lol).
- Dip writing part of the pencil into the paint and dot away. You could also use a fine tip paintbrush as well. (Do one color and then the other.)
- Let egg dry, and write messages.
- Cut out strips of paper (leftover scrapbook paper would work great) and write your valentine message.
MESSAGE IDEAS
- You are “egg”selent
- Will you be my lovebird?
- You and I make the perfect hatch.

There’s another tutorial somewhere online, slightly more professional (not meant in a rude way.)
It involves cutting a tiny hole in the bottom of an uncooked egg, let it ‘drip empty’, rinse it out a couple of times and then (when it’s dry) you put a note inside (rolled up and pushed through the tiny hole on the bottom.)
After this you paint the egg and you add gemstones or stickers (or lots of paint and a sticker/bit of paper to cover the hole)
The egg will still look perfectly whole and the person opening it will be dumbfounded as they crack the egg open (don’t paint it tóó neatly) and discover a full written note inside.
I’ve pulled this trick about 5 times now, and since there’s shards of egg (but no clear hole visible where the paper went through) everyone’s always confused as to how I got the note in there.
It’s also great for a magic-trick, a kids’ party, something harry-Potter related (occamy eggs or the golden mermaid-egg) and easter and Valentines.
Or maybe even a proposal (but the ring will probably not fit inside, only the question.)
Lilith, Very common egg craft actually. Tons of those tutorials out there.
P.S. – After a very hard day, reading this comment was difficult. Maybe if it is occurring to you it COULD come off rude, it would be better left unsaid. I.e. I saw a tutorial online of a craft……………………..
This is so cute and I have so many plastic eggs. The kids would love to make these. Thanks for sharing at the #HomeMattersParty
Jenny, Thanks so much. I bet your kids will have fun with them.
