DIY Scrap Fabric Basket

Today, we are excited to share a feature from a member of our Facebook Upcycle Sharin group – Denise Reid. 

Denise is sharing a tutorial for a way to utilize fabric scraps to create a fabulous basket that has so many uses.  And, if you are looking for more ways to use up those pieces of fabric, we have 25 Creative and Thrifty Ways To Use Leftover Fabric Scraps.

Basket Material List

  •  2 pieces outer fabric 20″ x 18″ 
  •  Two pieces liner fabric  20″ x 18″
  •  2 pieces firm iron-on interfacing 20″x18″
  •  2 pieces for handles 19″x 2.5″ (you can go smaller if you like)

DIY Basket Instructions

Iron on the interfacing to the wrong side of each piece of the outer fabric.

With right sides together stitch sides and bottom of the basket.
 
*Be sure to leave a large opening on the bottom seam of the liner to be able to turn out the finished basket. 
 
Iron flat the seams.
 
I use this trick: Hold down and iron one side of the seam. Flip basket over and repeat on other side of the seam thus giving you a flat seam when you match them up for the next step.

Still with right sides together match one side seam to the bottom seam.

The first time you do this it feels rather awkward but it gets easier.

Measure from the corner point
Measure from the corner point 4″ on each side. Mark with a pen. Draw a line to connect the two marks giving you a seam line.
 
 
After stitching on the line, cut off corner to trim seam. Repeat on the other side.

Turn basket so the wrong sides are facing. 
 
Fit the liner portion over the outer portion right sides together. Pin tops together easing in the liner fullness. Stitch 1/2″ seam making sure to see over the raw edges of the straps.
 
Using the opening in the liner bottom turn right side out.

DIY Scrap Fabric Basket Straps (if desired)

*Or you can do rope handles by adding them in between the inner and outer fabric (as pictured in top basket).

Iron 1/2″  fold on both long sides of the strap. Fold the long way lining up the folds. (Need 2 of these. )

To finish stitch up one side  of each strap and down the other side.

Baste straps in place on the outside of the basket.

Basket Lining 

Repeat the steps for the outer basket without the interfacing.
 
Lining - Repeat the steps for the outer basket without the interfacing.

Press flat the lining top, pin and topstitch around the rim close to the edge. Repeat 1/4″ from the first stitch line.

Hand stitch the lining bottom closed and put in place.

Note: if your fabric has a directional pattern make sure you sew the bottom seam on the correct side.  As you can see (gulp) I did not double-check before I stitched and cut.

    about the interfacing. Is it a certain
    type, thickness & brand? Can it be used on anything or does it come in different thickness? Thank you.

      Hi maria. This was a guest post and so we aren’t sure what type of interfacing she used. From the photos it doesn’t look overly thick.
