Just like using a chicken trough, here is a wire file organizer plate rack, farmhouse style.
Not a moment of life is wasted on a farm. -Jim Fisher
This might very well be a duel repurpose project since using a chicken trough as a plate rack is one repurpose. Now, I’m taking an office file organizer to look like a chicken trough to then be used as a plate rack.

With the farmhouse trend being so popular it can make items expensive and/or hard to come by. Which is really kind of funny since most items were a way to make do in the first place.
You are then left to…
- scour to find one
- purchase a new one and DIY it to look old
- and/or see if something can be used in place of
Hmmmmmm, which will we choose?
If you are a regular here, you might have an idea which we will choose.
A thrift store wire organizer becomes a plate rack…
This wire file organizer was $1.99 at our local Goodwill (here is one that is already silver).
We already had THIS hammer spray paint, which is a great galvanized metal substitute, leftover from our SALVAGE KITCHEN REMODEL = Cost $0
With just a couple of quick coats (letting it dry after each one), this is now a great farmhouse substitution.
And in true salvaged style, the plates here are from a thrift store as well.
The great thing about this project is when the trend is over, it can go back to its original purpose (or upcycled again to something altogether different).

That’s a cute alternative to a chicken feeder trough thingie! Way to use what’s available. And I agree those stupid chicken feeders have gotten so expensive π
Pam, It def is filling my need. I love the trough’s but I just knew I wouldn’t use it long enough to justify trying to buy one. Thanks for stopping by!!
Such a great repurpose and definitely on-trend! Thanks for sharing a great affordable alternative.
Vicki and Jenn, Appreciate that so much. I’m happy with the faux look and the price tag π
You are right, those racks are a rare commodity. I used to see them all the time for a great price, now, wowza, out of my price range. Guess I can still afford a letter holder however.

Bliss, Or maybe you will find something else that will work just the same. For me, I fell in love with the price of this π Can’t beat 1.99 !
Such a smart repurpose! I may have paid too much for one, after wanting one for the longest time! Will be keeping my eye out for this!

Cindy, Some pieces are totally worth finding an original piece. I did that for my stained glass. It was more than what I normally spend on things but the piece will be with me til I die π I just knew for me I wouldn’t use a plate rack long enough to buy a “real” one so this was a good compromise.
You are so right! As soon as something becomes trendy the price goes way up when it was supposed to be a frugal alternative. Oh the irony! I absolutely love how you transformed your thrifted find and it looks so fantastic Deborah!
Vanessa, Thanks so so much. It still has a similar vibe to me so I am happy about that……and even happier about the price π
Wow, awesome alternative to something that is way pricey! Love the look and the price!
Kristi, The price won me over for sure!! lol
I love this idea and I am so stealing it! I have a dish obsession and I was considering getting rid of one of my china sets but I think I’ll do this instead.
Mary Beth, Steal away. I can’t wait to see what you do!
I used an old vinyl album holder for this and it worked out perfectly. Great idea! I love how I turned out.
Cathy, Oh that’s an awesome idea!
Oh gosh! This is so clever! I will definitely be looking for a similar organizer!
Jane, Thanks so much. I love an inexpensive option to something I just won’t use very long.
Well that was genius!!!! I love those plate racks but was never willing to pay the price. I am now on the hunt for one of those. Thanks for the inspiration.

Jessica, Thanks so much. I’m all about cheap and cheerful π
I would have never thought to use the file folder for dishes….but it works. Oddly, raising chickens and I have not seen one of those feeders so I guess I missed the trend! π

Laura, Oh, I am sure you will see them now that you are on the lookout. π Lizmariegalvan has a great big beautiful one on a buffet.
What a brilliant idea! I see lots of these at Goodwill, but this never crossed my mind.
I can’t believe how much things have gone up, and the rustier it is the higher priced it is. I wish I would of had the foresight to save some of these things that we use to just throw away. Just in the last couple years I have noticed Goodwill has doubted their prices.

Linda, Isn’t that the truth? And I find it so funny when you see a price tag on something at a thrift store and it’s higher than the original price tag π Thanks for stopping by my friend!
Super clever Idea! Will be keeping an eye out for a file holder next time out treasure hunting!
