How in all this world do you live with your own broken heart? – Ann Voskamp
Do you have a New Year’s resolution?
For some, they choose lofty goals, others choose a word of the year ( Alphabetical List; Word of the Year Ideas), and for others, simple goals are for them.
This year, I made a commitment to read one book a month. Not a lot to some of you all, but I had fallen out of the habit of regular reading.
To help me, I asked for some books for Christmas.
I saw this book, Be The Gift, by Ann Voskamp, at Barnes & Noble and thought it looked interesting. At first, I thought it was a book on random acts of kindness as I had just glanced at a few pages.
The Mister decided to give it to me for Christmas however when he went to the store they said they were out. He asked an employee if there were any more copies and the employee said there didn’t appear to be any but would check anyway. Lo and behold, the employee searched and found just one – meant to be.
BOOK REVIEW
I was already leaning toward giving as my word of the year so I decided this would be my January book.
AND LET ME JUST SAY – WOW!
Have you ever read a book and feel like you will never be the same? This was one of them.
I started reading it without a notepad…BIG MISTAKE! I had to start over so I could capture all the golden nuggets. Now, my notepad is pretty much a copy of the book …so many pearls.
The tagline is …..let your brokenness be turned into abundance. That’s like my life motto as a Salvage Sister so this was right up my alley.
Here’s to the gift, to listening to others and seeing the opportunties to be God’s gifts every day of the year. Here’s to the Thanksgiving that becomes thanks-living in our everyday lives. – Ann Voskamp
To me, this book really highlighted taking whatever hardships, heartache, brokenness we have and use it to help others (gift). Plus, in the process of using it, we find purpose and meaning in our own lives-abundant living.
Be The Gift Favorite Quotes
As I mentioned, I took so many notes I felt as if I just copied the book down. There were so many great quotes, but here are a few favorites:
- Even in the depths of our own brokenness – actually, because of the depths of our own brokenness – God can use each of us to be a gift to another broken heart. He makes us enough, makes our brokenness into abundance, to give to the broken-hearted.
- Bad brokenness is broken by good brokenness.
- Five random acts of kindness in a week can increase happiness for up to three months later.
- Your time is limited – so don’t limit your life by wanting someone else’s.
- The life that yields the most- yields the most.
- The way to break time’s hold on me is to be broken and given with my time.
I could literally go on…and on…..and on!
Be The Gift Movement
Ann’s writing is meaningful and the images are gorgeous. The book itself is easy to pick up and read at any given time.
Truth be told, this was a book that I would like to read over and over again, but I was convicted to pass it along. I mean really, would I really read it again? But it was a gift to me, I protested. Yep, I argue with myself.
In the end, the point was to be broken. Yes, this was a small broken, but I was parting with something the Mister just gave me; a book that moved me. It was something that I felt I could benefit from reading again, but the point was to #bethegift.
Where to Purchase
If you feel like you could benefit from less stress, abundant joy, and want more meaning to your life and what you’ve gone through, this is an excellent book.
