Are you afraid to paint your kitchen cabinets? Here is some inspiration as well as some help to get you started.
Life is a great big canvas, throw all the paint you can on it. – Danny Kaye
If you have been with us for a while, you may have seen our KITCHEN CABINET MAKEOVER.
It was our first time painting so we learned a lot. One, don’t rush the process. It seems obvious but I wanted so much done to this fixer-upper home before we moved in so it got a little hasty. I saw so many pictures of painted cabinets I thought it could be done quickly. It can, but not that quick.
Because of that experience, what we learned, and the fact that my mother-in-law took to doing all her cabinets by herself (info below) that I thought I would share some info for anyone who might be afraid to start the process.
So are you ready to start?

WOW! Your cabinets look amazing! Painting my cabinets was the best decision ever!!!
Hi Anne, Thanks so much. This is actually my Mother-in Laws house but they did turn out beautiful! Appreciate you stopping by!
How does chalk paint hold up as opposed to other brands with primer? I want to paint my cabinets so badly, but I’m so afraid that it won’t stand up the how hard my family is ON EVERYTHING!!!! It looks beautiful, btw!
Hi Maggie, We did kitchen cabinets with a primer and regular paint before and it’s done fine. The key is the seal to protect it. Does that help? (I have two teen boys and the white cabinets we have done are just fine!)
Can you share the color of your MIL’s cabinets? How have they held up? I’m on the verge of taking the leap of painting over my ugly honey oak…but I’ll admit, I’m a bit chicken!
Hi Maggie, I linked to the exact color to avoid any confusion but I believe it’s French Linen?? You don’t have to buy it through the link but you can see the exact one if you are interested. And I know it’s a bit of an undertaking, but totally worth it if you ask me. Slow and steady. She did this project all by herself.
I feel like my cabinets aren’t “real wood” they seem wood inside but he front of them have some sort of film or panel on them I’m nervous to start this project or sanding and get into something
Samantha, I don’t think any of the cabinets we have done are true wood. My thought is to lightly sand and try the back of a door first and see if you like it.
love it. one of our first homes was a single wide trailer and I painted the cabinets white. It lightened things up and I loved how it turned out.
Kirstin recently posted…These are a few of My Favorite Things and Dreams
Kirstin,
When we did our kitchen white, wow what a difference. (But a ton of work!)
I have used Anne Slaon chalk paint before and I do LOVe the stuff. Although, I have only ever sealed it with their dry wax. What poly did you use? Water or oil based? Did you spray it on or wipe it?
Hi Crystal, This was an oil based poly. It was just applied NOT sprayed. Thanks so much for stopping by!!!
