“Family is more than blood.”
It was about thirteen years ago, after much thought and prayer, we decided we would start the process of adoption.
There are around 400,000 kids in the United States Foster Care System.
After research, conferences, materials, a home study, classes, etc, we adopted a 3 year old child from the U.S. Foster Care System.
We were now adoptive parents of a child with a history most of us wouldn’t wish on an enemy.
Does that already impress you? It shouldn’t!
WE AREN’T SAINTS BECAUSE WE ADOPTED
BUT we get it ALLLLLLLLLLLLLL the time!
“Wow, you guys are so wonderful.”
This is especially true if they know of some of the issues we have had in this process. And make no mistake there have been ISSUES UPON ISSUES!
Although we realize these comments are meant as compliments, it doesn’t paint the right picture.
We wish we could tell you we are saints.
Sadly, not so much.I’m only human Of flesh and blood I am. Human Born to Make Mistakes.
Even though we went into this with good intentions, we really didn’t have an idea of what we were doing…
We have been very naïve at times.
Haven’t always understood trauma and it’s ramifications (long term)
We have lost site of the damage that was done at a very important development stage.
AND WE HAVE MADE MISTAKES!
Just like you do with any child however it is compounded by the fact that they have already lived through so much already.
And here is another VERY IMPORTANT POINT…
We are equally blessed.
Not rainbow in the clouds perfect but blessed!
In life, sometimes your greatest challenges bring the greatest personal growth.
Through this, we have learned more about Grace …giving AND receiving it.
We have a child who, with all the challenges, has a forgiving heart, is gifted, and has the sweetest little face you ever did see……but please don’t get suckered by it 🙂
We have grown, continue to grow, and will be growing more and more each day!
